It’s a beautiful day in London, and it’s time for DC show 34 to hit the net, which this week weighs a chunky 50 minutes.

This week we continue our Archetypes of Magic series with a look at combo. Firstly we try to define what combo actually is and talk about it for a bit, then we dive straight into Magic’s combo past with a look at some significant combo decks from days gone by. As promised, we’ve also shot an accompanying video, Clash of the Combos, for this show which will be available on Monday, July 28.

As mentioned in the show, we’ll be away until August 22nd when we’ll return with an M-Fest special. This is because I’m flying off to sunnier climes for a few weeks, and Dan is going to be busy with summer stuff, too.

As always we’d love to hear what you think about the show at show@deckconstruct.com. We’re also around on Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and Twitter.

Thanks for listening!

    Hello guys,
I subscribed to your podcast last year and have been listening every Friday since! good job on your pod cast I love the show. I haven’t ever commented before and wanted to introduce myself. I live in Pennsylvania USA and I started playing magic in the days of Revised and The Dark. Like Alex, I took a long break in which I sold my collection on eBay and bought a sailboat and sailed as a hobby for a while. I am 34 and in my local area on north east PA there is a comic shop that holds weekly tourneys. Each week they rotate the format. So in theory there is a vintage, legacy, extended and standard sanctioned game each month.

I wanted to comment on show 34. You both were talking about the vintage flash hulk deck and how it can win on turn one. I actually have a build which isn’t legal anymore, but it has a pretty regular turn 0 win using gemstone cavern. The deck was sick and quite broken. I am glad Wizards did something about it, even though I played it. I would sit down and apologize to my opponent before we started. You know there is something wrong when playing a deck makes you feel guilty. I only built it to win a set of volcanic islands. As it turns out the build I had wasn’t the stronger of the builds I know. There was another fellow there with the build that is more protected with force of wills and pacts of negation. My turn 0 win build sacrificed the backup of counter magic to go off turn 0 pretty consistently. I am sure you have seen the deck around but if not, I will gladly send you the deck list.

    Thanks for a great show!

Hey Chris, thanks for listening to the show. I’m glad it’s palatable to your ears. :)

Your comment about you apologising to your opponent reminds me of a story I once heard about a Turbofog deck at a tourney somewhere. The deck won its first few matches and word got around that an incredibly annoying fog deck was being played by some person. Anyway, word about the hate for this deck eventually reached the guy playing it, and in his next match, as he played his first Plains, he just said “I’m sorry”. I’m not sure if he top-eighted or not.

The fact that your Hulk Flash deck could win on turn 0 just shows how nuts Hulk Flash is (or was), and I’d love to see your list. Why not post it on our forums, or if you prefer send it to show@deckconstruct.com. Thanks!
