DC 81 – Poison: The Gathering Storm

It’s Friday, it’s the day before Scars of Mirrodin is unleashed upon the world, and it’s also time to unleash show 81!

This week, the show is about poison, or rather the poison archetype. Scars has infected Magic with a lot of new cards that love to deal poison damage, so I’ve decided to look at how a Standard poison deck might come together.

To kick things off, I talk about the good and bad of playing with poison, including some things to think about if you build with poison in mind.

After that is a look at a couple of colour combinations, as well as a skeleton poison build that could be the start of a beautiful relationship with the Phyrexian oil.

As always, your comments, suggestions and gourmet chocolate suggestions are very welcome at show@deckconstruct.com. Also, don’t forget to check out the DC forums for a nice cup of tea and a chat about Magic.

You’ll also find DC on the social aethersphere at Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.

Thanks for listening!

Great show! I love infect myself, and can’t wait to see it in action. You made a mistake though, since Contagion Engine’s second ability allows to proliferate twice, for the same amount of mana as Contagion Clasp. I believe it is a great finisher at that 6 mana, while also it’s colorless mass removal, which only affects your opponent. Also, using proliferate could allow you to cast Garruk Wildspeaker, proliferate to raise him to 4 loyalty counters, and then immediately use his third ability to overrun your opponent.

Your Baneslayer example doesn’t quite work because BSA has first strike, so it blows up Plague Stinger before it can take damage and gain the -1/-1 counters … but the sentiment holds true.

Also, I think including Corpse Cur and Necropede in the deck might be a nice addition. If you do, it might warrant using Throne of Geth to proliferate. Maybe it’s just me, but I believe proliferate is a really strong mechanic.

I agree with you poison is going to rock, a see alot of potential in your base poison build, I acctually have something similar in mind, one card I want to include that seems amazing in my mind but I’m going to playtest it and then I’ll mention it to u if it works out well for me. either way I’ll by the time I go to states, I plan on testing this deck alot.

Though throne of Geth doesn’t work well in a posion deck, it is itself an artifact, meaning you could play it, and sacrifice it to proliferate with itself. So it can be used without artifacts but I’m not sure if it’s worth the two mana to proliferate only once. Plus lose the card.
