DC 72 – The Newcomer’s Primer

London was warm and sunny this week, and the weekend looks like more of the same. So, what better time to release show 72 into the wild!

This week’s show is one that I’ve wanted to do for a long time: a primer for newcomers to Magic. If you’ve played for a while, you might already know everything I talk about in this show, but a lot of DC’s audience are newcomers to the game.

To start off, I discuss what some of the more popular formats are comprised of and some miscellaneous things, too.

Next, I go over some Magic terms you’ll come across.

Lastly, I explain some keywords you’ll find in the game, and end with an explanation of some Magic slang you’ll probably hear while playing.

As always, your feedback is very much appreciated at show@deckconstruct.com. Also, check out the DC forums, especially if you’re not sure about some part of the game.

You’ll also find DC on the usual social wires at Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr.

Thanks for listening!

You did a really good job with this week’s show. It’s really good to have a primer for new players, easily accessible and understandable. I remember doing a tutorial teaching MtG and explaining all these things, available on YouTube in 9 parts.

I have a criticism to add, about the 4cc part. It may just be the way you use the term, saying it stands for 4CMC, however, I always use it as a template name, meaning it’s 6CMC, costing 4 generic mana and 2 colored mana of the same color.

    Great show, keep it up!

Thank you so much for doing a show like this. As a returning player there are things I forget and I’ve been really enjoying your older podcasts. So much so that I downloaded all of them.

Now there’s a grand start to the morning! Driving into work listening to this episode, and wouldn’t you know but ErtaisLament gets a mention! Much appreciated, mate. I really enjoy DeckConstruct (your coverage of your recent trip to France for the GP was some great listening), so it was an added treat.

Self-interest aside, this was a good episode, and one often overlooked. I’ve been bringing a few folks into the game here recently, I’ll be sure to make this recommended listening.

  4. [...] Alright, so maybe featured is something of a stretch, but our humble little site garnered a welcome endorsement from Alex on the most recent episode of the DC podcast. [...]

Thanks for the comments, guys! As I said in the show, this is an episode I’ve wanted to do for a while. Although a lot of experienced players (and even one or two judges!) listen to the show, I don’t want to lose sight of new or returning players.

Viki: Post a link to your YouTube series, I’d be interested to see it!

Hello, it is hard for me to find people to play with. If play alone, do you suggest ‘Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers’ video game from steam.

If not, play magic online?? I am welcome to all suggestion.

    Thank you.

    Hi Mango!

Duels is a fine place to get started with Magic, but it is somewhat hampered by its lack of customisation. It’s more of a “game-in-a-box” which gives you a slice of what Magic is like, but there’s so much more to the game (deckbuilding, facing competitive and varied decks, etc).

I’d definitely recommend Magic Online. The podast Limited Resources have an excellent primer for the starting MTGO player here: http://mtgcast.com/?p=4013
