Can someone confirm if you can copy a creature with shroud with a clone?

My understanding was you coudlnt but chatting to a friend, clone doesnt state that you target the creature your cloning.

As clone does not have the word target on the card then clone can copy a shrouded creature. Cards like rite of replication have target in them so it can't copy shrouded creatures.

It's also worth noting that you can Clone a creature with protection from blue.
