Magical Music
Well I figure since we are all getting to know one another why not ask that question that seems to have such varied answers especially when most of us are from all over the world. I'm always eager to hear something new in any genre.

For me the biggest music I listen to is metal. The second biggest being techno. My favorite artists being things like Messugah, Between the Buried and me, Tool, and Gojira in metal/Rock. Deadmau5, Kaskade, and Armin Van Burren in Techno.

What are your musical preferences?
Do you listen to music while you play magic ever?
Ever make a deck listening to a song just to see if you can embody the song in a deck?
Metal isn't hard, Red fire spells. Smile

RE: Magical Music
I do listen to music when playing magic with my friends not when playing in tournaments though. I hate the people who have earbuds during tournaments (especially when they start singing along).

In general I also listen to metal (I believe the subgenre I prefer is either post-grunge or industrial). Pulling up my gaming playlist I have Breaking Benjamin, Tool, Rise Against, Nine Inch Nails, Three Days Grace, Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip(British Electronica), Olivier Deriviere (video game soundtrack composer), and a Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten. I plan on adding some Perfect Circle to that soon.

RE: Magical Music
Ah, I'm at work right now listening to Perfect Circle. Pretty much if Maynard touched it, I like it. Even the lesser group Pucifer had some winning songs on there. Now at tournaments I believe there really is no place for music. You can't have your ear buds in when your opponent is trying to talk to you about what is going on. Besides that isn't it better to be social while playing magic? Isn't that part of the point?

If I had to name a sub Genre of metal I like progressive. I mean Between the Buried in me is my favorite band. If you are an avid listener of metal I recommend the CD colors Browncoat. They have a [b]Pink Floyd[/c] like feel in that their cd's are made to listen to from start to finish. I warn ahead though that they scream, something that I believe has to be done right to sound good, but they sound amazing. The guitar work in their songs is too pro. I can agree that I listen to most of the bands that you had listed there. Not huge into Rise against but they have a handful of songs that I like. Breaking Benjamin probably plays 5 to 6 concerts a year in my town so they are kind of played out here, (St.Louis) and since our local DJ's love them, they play a ton of their music on the radio too. I liked them in the begining but I think that the public here has made me not want to hear them anymore for a while. Never heard of Dan le Sac vs Scroobius pip. Gonna have to check that one out myself.

RE: Magical Music
For me if Maynard or Trent Reznor touched it, I generally like it. The thing I hate about Puscifer is that I know that if I take one of their albums up to the counter at a record store I will probably get some weird looks (not to mention my mother would have a heartattack). I can understand that Breaking Benjamin can be overplayed as most of their recent singles are pretty awful and hearing Diary of Jane over and over makes me hate them too (though I can never get tired of hearing Blow Me Away).

Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip are probably best known for the song Thou Shalt Always Kill. All their songs are fairly solid and they have a new album that will be released in March in the UK (no word on when it will reach the states though Sad)

I know I have heard Between the Buried and Me though I can't remember any of their songs. I thought it was funny though seeing that they were a localish band for me so I recognized a number of the small bands they have played with. I will give them a listen this afternoon.

RE: Magical Music
I generally prefer metal, sub-categorie is symphonic so things like Nightwish. I also have Killswitch engage, a bunch of foreign music (I'm from America) e.g. Rammstein, some Hebrew stuff I was sent, Girugamesh, are a few. And outside of that my iTunes has music from almost every genre you could name...probably.

RE: Magical Music
Rich if you like stuff that sounds sort of symphonic with metal backgrounds have you ever heard of Opeth? They do a real good job of stuff like that. You also have Kamelot if you think you would dig opera with a metal background. I would suggest that for a first song for Kamelot go with "March of Mephisto"

Awesome. I've heard of Opeth but don't recall if I ever heard their music. I'm going to go look for that all now, thanks a lot. Big Grin

RE: Magical Music
I often listen to classical when building decks, as it helps me to concentrate. I don't listen to music while playing Magic, though.

Otherwise, I listen to all kinds of stuff: John Mayer, Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Copy, Fleet Foxes, JPop and JRock, Genesis, Richard Jacques (videogame composer), Pink Floyd, Jazztronik, loads of trance etc. etc.

They're not too bad. I mostly listen to Above & Beyond, 7Skies, Andy Blueman... melodic stuff like that.

Enjoy the Kaskade gig. He's supposed to awesome live.

We seen above and beyond at this club in St.Louis about 4 months ago. I might be a little off on the date but that's probably one of the best group performances I've seen. I'll tell you about Kaskade when I get home Sunday. Deadmau5 though still probably my #1 Dj. That guy can get cities jumping.

I'm into my 60s and 70s rock and blues, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Cream, The Beatles so on and so forth. I play the guitar though, and don't mind playing metal, especially Joe Satriani.

Surfing with the Alien was the most recent thing I learned.

RE: Magical Music
Wow Artic, and on your list of bands I've seen live:

Mastadon
Gojira
Korn
Deadmau5 (Whole reason I'm going to the Electronic Daisy Carnival this year)
Dethklok (which was surprisingly good since none of it's members are real)

Would love to catch daft punk live sometime but they are hard to find in the States. Unless I want to do some serious traveling I doubt I'll get to see them.
