Mono Black Control
Alright, this is an archetype ive loved since the OLD extended, back when it went back to Mirrodin, and DDT decks were running rampant. The deck used to only run 8 creatures, and only a total of 4 of them ever really attacked the opponent.
With some of the new cards from New Phyrexia having been spoiled recently, i felt that it was high time that the archetype was brought back to life. One of the new cards that really has me excited is Phyrexian Canceler, which reads: ''Phyrexian Canceler BBBB Creature - Horror Trample Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Canceler, that sources controller sacrifices that many permanents. 5/5'' Just wow, a 5/5 creature that is practically unblockable for a mere 4 mana. If we still had the old extended, this would have been the card to replace the rotated-out Greater Harvester. Not only is it a VERY efficient beater, but it is also an excellent deterrent to other attacks, as people wont run non-evasive creatures into this guy. Its mainly because of this card that i really want to build something around it, so here goes, a first draft of a deck that i'll refine after a little testing here and there. Land: 24 4 Verdant Catacombs 20 Swamp Creatures: 16 4 Phyrexian Canceler 4 Phylactery Lich 4 Leaden Myr 4 Gatekeeper of Malakair Other Spells: 20 4 Darksteel Axe 4 Duress 4 Inquisition of Kozilek 2 Doom Blade 2 Go For The Throat 4 Grasp of Darkness Sideboard: 15 2 Doom Blade 2 Go For The Throat 3 Phyrexian Revoker 3 Hex Parasite 2 Screamwhip 3 Vampire Nighthawk Alright, you might be wondering what two of those sideboard cards are, and that's fine, as they're also spoiled from New Phyrexia. Hex Parasite: 1 Artifact Creature - Insect X[bp]: Target a permanent. Remove up to X counters from that permanent and Hex Parasite gets +1/+0 for each counter removed this way. 1/1 Screamwhip 4 Artifact - Equipment Living Weapon Equip [bp] [bp] Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each swamp you control. You might also be wondering what the hell [bp] is, and before you ask, its not anything to do with oil. Basically, there is a new cost on cards in this set, and that is shown by a phyrexian symbol on a coloured circle [White, Blue, Black, red and Green] This means, that you are able to either pay one of the colour that it is representing, you you may pay 2 life. This makes some of the spells that are in this set rather crazy, as you can just pay a little life, and cast them a lot earlier in the game. In the case of the cards that im running in the board, it's basically to counteract the planeswalkers that are running around at the moment. Hex Parasite will more than likely be replaced with Vampire Hexmage, but i like the idea that it pumps itself when it removes counters and doesnt die. Well, i hope to get a little feedback about this, and if you want to see the cards that have been spoiled so far, you can go here: http://mtgsalvation.com/new-phyrexia-spoiler.html Jackal |

RE: Mono Black Control
Alright, with the addition of a new card being spoiled, i an making the following change to the deck.
-4 Leaden Myr +4 Surgical Extraction Now, this is another New Phyrexia card, which is a functional reprint of another MBC staple, Extirpate. For those that dont know what Extirpate did, heres the wording for the new version, there really isnt any difference. Choose target card in your opponents graveyard that isnt a basic land, search that player's graveyard, hand and library for all copies of that card and exile them. That player shuffles his or her library. The only real difference here is in the fact that Extirpate had Split Second, making it very hard to get around. While this version doesnt have that, it does have something that's just as nice. The mana cost is [PB] meaning you can play it by paying 2 life. So on the first turn, you could get rid of almost anything in your opponent's deck by casting either Duress or Inquisition of Kozilek, then paying 2 life to get rid of every copy. Would really suck if you were playing Relentless Rats though... |

RE: Mono Black Control
I would suggest trading inquisition for despise. It's also from the new set and still costs b. But lets you choose a creature or planeswalker instead of converted mana cost 3 or less. This lets you get rid of big creatures too which is the only thing missed by both duress and inquisition. Also i think you should consider running more artifacts for the lich. I would stick with indestructible. Maybe run the 3 mana myr or the 0 mana indestructible artifact from the new set.
