So last week at magic, a friend of mine introduced a new casual format to me. It's called type 4 and it is really, really fun.

The setup:
There are usually 4 or 5 players, and one library. In the library there is only 1 of each card, and you usually want a good balance of stupidly overpowered creatures, counterspells, and board sweepers, and search/draw. Everyone also shares one graveyard.

The play:
You high-role for going first, and the person who goes first does draw a card. each starts with 2 cards in hand. This format is nicknamed limited infinity because of the key rules: you have infinite mana, but there is an imaginary rule of law in play (you can only play one card per turn.)

Obviously with the infinite mana cards like fireball are banned. Sorry if this came out as a mess, but this is a really fun format and i encourage you to try it.

It's Thanksgiving here in the U.S. so i thought i'd say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Just wanted to say a couple of things to the gang who might still be checking in. it all has to do with what i'm thankful for this year. yes of course i'm thankful for the great family i have, great wife and two beautiful daughters. things are going well at work and so on. but as far as this forum is concerned i wanted to say that after 11 months of truly playing Magic that i still really love it and am glad to have re-discovered it so to speak. Perviously for many years i had played Magic the way some might occasionally go bowling or play darts. nothing very serious. but since December of '07, it has been a fantastic year of playing, buying cards, reading about & interacting with fellow Magic devotees. that's it. glad to be part of such a international community that loves it's game.

Hello there, I'm new to Deck Construct, and this is my frist thread.

When Shards came out, and I opened up my first booster packs, I saw all the artifacts, (as well as pulling a foil master of etherium,) and had to make the Esper deck. I did just that, and it worked quite well, posting a 10 wins 3 loses record over 2 weeks of Friday Night Magic at my local shop. This was fun for awhile, but, like anyone, I wanted to make a new one. So I went with Bant, and immedietly went online to see what kind of Bant decks people were making. When I put mine together, it featured all Shards cards, and was pretty different than the ones I was seeing. This is probably because I have to play on a budget, and can't afford older and expensive cards. This is what I got:

Lands-23
3 Seaside Citadel

2 Bant Panorama
9 Plains
5 Forest
3 Island

Creatures-30
4 Akrasan Squire

it's been a while for me. thought I'd try talking a little Shards. I've taken a liking to Bant & Esper decks. I've been play testing a lot with some limited decks. so far, like a lot of other people, I like this set. what has everyone been playing in Shards?

I'm also in the process of building an Exalted/Bant deck. It features Rafiq of the Many x4, Empyrial Archangel x2, Battlegrace Angel x4, Elspeth, Knight-Errant x2, Angelic Benediction.

I need some good counter spells. any suggestions ?

Everyone seems to be up for meetup up during the week end, so what do you think of this Saturday the 4th of October?

This is a free meetup - no tournament - only for us to meetup, have a laugh and start playing our Legacy decks.

I will be doing the Reward Card Scheme, just for fun :) Also to keep count of who was top dog of the day...

I think 2pm is a good start time and then it allows people to play-on until when they want or probably when they can get the last train back home... And for those of you who want to get there earlier, The Pembury Tavern does great food.
Post me a message if you want any more info.

Heres a new idea for a deck, that is mostly GB elves, but with quite a bit of control.

heres the list
4x Imperious Perfect
4x Llanowar elves
4x Nameless inversion
4x Wren’s run Vanquisher
4x Elvish Harbinger
3x Civic wayfinder
3x Primal command
2x Eyeblight’s ending
2x Masked admirers
2x Mind Shatter
2x Loxodon warhammer
1x Skullmulcher
1x Cloudthresher
1x Sarkhan Vol
1x Thoughtseize

9 forest
6 swamp
2 mountain
2 vivid grove
2 vivid marsh
1 plains (for the obliv rings sideboarded)

also, any suggestions for the sideboard will be apperciated.
a note is that i am including lots of one ofs for the fetch from the primals, and i dont have that much money. I could also get one Garruk from my freind to add to the list. Im not sure what other red spells to add cos i really want to use the sarkan, but shards didnt provide much in terms of red/green. The mountains can be fetched thru civic wayfinder, and the elvish harbingers can fetch removals (eyeblights or nameless), and various other elves, while producing any colour. Just a question, it may sound dumb, but how about a blaze for an alternate win condition. a burn spell for 5 or so is pretty good when they have a big blocker that you cant get past. also, any advice for anti wog/firespout for the elves? i tried the enchantment that gives 1/1 tokens, but found that it is kinda sub-par when they dont have a wog or firespout or pyroclasm, since that card in your hand could have been a wrens run to beat them down sooner. also, any beefy creatures that cant be removed easily like colossus, but not as monetarily expensive as colossus?

thanks

Hey guys.

Is there anyone who can care to tell about their shards prerelease experiences? I'm just wondering how all of you went and which cards you cracked, and which decks you built.

Ill start by saying that i built a Jund deck, with quite a few burns and lots of manafixing. The best card i reckon in the deck was the 3 and red 1/1 with devour 3. hard to remove cept with excecutioners and it was a 10/10 or 7/7 when i got it out.

Our local shop had a game called bingo, and in the round where i won bingo, we would say bingo when attacked by an angel, sphinx, or dragon... I was attacked by 5 4/4 flying dragons from a sarkhan vol... ouch. I was then promptly rewarded a shards booster for my troubles from the TO. In that pack i actually got a mythic rare!, the elspeth planeswalker, which makes 1/1's and makes your creatures flying. i have now got two of those, one from a booster, and one from the tounament pack. In the end, i went 2-2, with my losses against a guy who drew sarkhan both games!, and killed me two turns later after stalling with a war monk- the 3/4 lifelink. The other match, i mullied to five and lost, then the next game i got a good opening hand, and drew lands the next ten or so turns as i stalled with burns from branching bolt and blood cultist. and lost.

I received two boosters at the end, and opened a SARKHAN VOL. Pardon me, cos its the first really good rare i have opened myself from a booster. I must say that my first sanctioned event has been really fun and i reckon i did okay for my first time.

There are some great changelings out there so I figured I would give a shot at building a deck around them. Works well except Sage and Jace aren't doing a great job with color draw. Murmuring Bosk and several of Lorwyns Duel lands (the changelings make them come into play without tapping) work well for a 4 color mana base. Only tested it once I'll keep playing but if you have any sugestions or know a great card that could take advantage of all the shapeshifters let me know.

Creatures:
4 Mirror Entity
4 Shapesharer
4 Taurean Mauler
2 Chameleon Colossus
1 Cairn Wanderer
2 Duplicant

1 Sage of Fables
2 Merrow Reejerey
2 Haakon, Stormgald Scourge
2 Oona's Blackguard
1 Gilt-Leaf Archdruid
1 Reaper King
1 Harmonic Sliver
1 Necrotic Sliver (might switch out for a second Harmonic Sliver)
Spells:
3 Buried Alive
3 Stitch Together
4 Nameless Inversion
basically lots of blink, untap and removal.
I love Merieke with Intruder Alarm it's just silly.
I'm giving a shout out now for this one because we know how long it takes to build for EDH.
I'll post more info when I have it but I'm really excited about this one, in the true spirit of EDH it will be a multiplayer format. Player will go into pods and get points based on when they died, then swiss pair on for the next pod.
Any one with interest or ideas feel free to touch base with me on this one.

The Big Shards of Alara Pre-Release Discussion Thread

This is the place to tell everyone where you're going for the Shards pre-release (you ARE going, aren't you?!?!). Which part of your country will you be in come the 27th and 28th? How much trading do you hope to do? Anything else you want to tell us? Do so here! Of course, if you're a TO, feel free to post a separate thread for your event (or post one on your TO's behalf if they don't know about this place).

On the Saturday I'll be in Brighton on England's sunny south coast (!) for the first Magic pre-release there! It's being hosted by Maverick (the one and the same from these forums) and he really should post a thread here for it. (Hint!) This will be the first PR I've been to outside of London, and I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully, along with some good games, I'll also get a few bits and pieces in my sealed pool for my extended decks.

The day after, I'll be in Richmond for the pre-release hosted by the lovely Sabina at They Walk Among Us. This time she's decided to host the PR on a Sunday, which is good because it means those people who want to go to other PRs on the Saturday, such as The Games Club's event in Central London, can do so and still take part in Richmond on the following day. Some of the Richmond group have become serious Magic art addicts, and tend to head to the Central London event on the Saturday to meet the guest artist there.

I haven't been this excited about a PR since Future Sight. It should be loads of fun. So, where will you be for la pré-version de Fragments d'Alara? :)

I've just been catching up on Alara previews, and thought I'd post an updated Zoo list. I've gotta say, it'll be very, very tempting to play this come January!

4 Stomping Ground
4 Temple Garden
4 Windswept Heath
4 Wooded Foothills
2 Fire-Lit Thicket
2 Wooded Bastion

4 Wild Nacatl
4 Bird of Paradise
4 Isamaru, Hound of Konda
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Watchwolf
4 Wooly Thoctar

4 Sarkhan Vol
4 Incinerate
4 Flame Javelin
4 Lightning Helix

Aside from the fetches, Goyf and Vol, this deck isn't too pricey and on paper looks like it can hit HARD. T1 Birds, T2 Thoctar, T3 Vol, swing for 6 with Vol pump, T4 say... Watchwolf, swing for 10 with Vol pump, T5 crack Vol for dragons, play second Vol, add counter, swing for lethal is pretty ridiculous. All this with burn backup as well.

Tip: Although Sarkhan Vol is a mythic (and anyone who's heard the podcast knows I'm not the biggest mythic fan in the world), if you can find 4 for £40 ($80-ish) or less, pick them up. The price will ROCKET as Extended season gets closer, and especially as dealers begin to realise they're not opening that many thanks to the 1-in-8 distribution.

Same deal for Stomping Ground and Temple Garden. They can currently be found on eBay for as little as £6 each, possibly less, but come January... whoosh. Unfortunately, fetches never really go down in price so there's a hit to be taken there if you don't already have them.

Goyf's price should drop a bit when it rotates out of Standard in 5 weeks' time. At least, I hope it will!

Tomorrow, September 10th, the Large Hadron Collider will be activated in an attempt to find out more info on the origins of the Big Bang and possibly even the existence of other dimensions. The Collider is the fastest particle accelerator ever created and, put simply, it's massive - a 27km ring underneath parts of France and Switzerland. The experiment is being undertaken at CERN in Switzerland. Some people have asked if it'll inadvertently create a black hole, but CERN says it's safe (and, in any case, France would be the first to go if it did create a hole). Check out the BBC site for more info.
It all starts at 8.30am UK time tomorrow morning. If it all goes tits up, well, it'll be one hell of an alarm clock for anyone who has slept in. ;)
