Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Alex - 2009-09-23 18:32 PM Welcome to the forums! In the old forums (which are now sadly lost), there was a thread where new members could introduce themselves. Well, here's the new version for the new forums. I'll kick things off. I'm Alex, and I've had two forays into the world of MTG. The first was in 1995 when I started with Ice Age and 4th Edition. I then stopped after a few months and didn't play again until September 2005. I got a free card in the mail with some stuff I'd ordered, thought eh, why not, and four years later I'm still handing over money to WotC. I prefer to play decks that let me do something each turn, like combo or aggro-control. I've tried a few pure control decks like U/W or Reveillark, but we never seem to get along. OK, your turn! RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Maverick - 2009-10-05 00:50 AM Thanks Alex good to be back. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - fifthchild - 2009-10-14 08:24 AM Hey boys and girls! I'm a brand new player (Zendikar is my first real set) and I found these forums from the podcast (which has been dead useful getting some starting advice, cheers). I live in Taiwan, so the group of players is pretty small, and mostly don't speak a whole lot of English. I have a regular group of exactly three people (myself included) but we have a bunch of fun. Getting contact with other players seems like a constructive and educational idea so even though I'm not really a forum person, this looks like a friendly place to hang out. Let's see how it goes. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Xx_dreamclaw_xX - 2009-10-28 13:24 PM erm hey all... im actually quite new to the game...been only playing since maybe time spiral. only started taking part in competitions this year. i live in singapore where several good players reside. i currently play a hypergenesis deck for legacy, a mana ramp deck and an ally deck for standard. i also just started a pretty cool dragonstorm deck nice to meet you all! RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - articpenguin - 2009-12-02 07:19 AM Hey guys. Playing since Timespiral. Took a break at the Alara block. Now I'm up and running again. Only played with friends and looking forward to making a good deck to play FNM with for the first time. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Darth Meatloaf - 2009-12-05 02:21 AM Hey all, my name is Josh from Milwaukee, WI, USA. I played back in the old days, starting with Revised and getting out around the time of Mirage. I just got back in with the release of M10. Damn, I miss my old cards... RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Truthhunter - 2009-12-27 01:32 AM My name is Nick. I started playing magic during the Onslaught block. I quit a year or two after. I then got back into it after playing the Xbox game, Duels of the Planeswalkers. I then bought a few theme decks from Mercadian Masques and Odyssey. I have never been in tournament play. I just play casually with none of the deck construction rules. I started listening to the podcast a few weeks ago. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - browncoat - 2010-01-04 03:49 AM Hi my name is Perry Grosch. I have played casually since Odyssey. For the last few years I have been trying to go to tournaments but that has been on and off. I stumbled across the podcast and was thrilled to find a podcast that had actual information as opposed to having the hosts ramble on constantly and laugh at their own jokes. I am generally an aggro nutjob but occasionally I play other decks, generally these are crazy and random (see 50 land). Hopefully I will get to more tournaments in the near future as a writer for deckconstruct. I also am going to be moving around a bit over the next few months so I won't have a definite store that I will be based out of. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - bizmuth - 2010-01-06 01:18 AM Hi everyone. My name's Bob, I'm 28, and from Rochester, NY. I learned about DC by searching for MTG podcasts in order to learn and familiarize myself with the game a bit more. I've wanted to learn how to play MTG since the late '90s, but never did until about two months ago. A few friends of mine play every Friday night, and when I was over there I sat and watched.... they were having a lot of fun and that prompted me to start learning. One of my friends started to explain the basics to me, and shortly thereafter I went and picked up the Liliana vs Garruk duel decks, which seemed like a good way to start. I also was given (by the employee of a local hobby shop) two 30 card starter decks, one red and one green. Since then, I've toyed around making different combinations of those cards into two decks, one for me, one for my gf. We've been playing a few times a week, and slowly learning. A friend of mine came up for a visit from Florida, and showed me some more stuff that I didn't know, like how to place counters, how to use Planeswalkers, etc. I just bought a lot of about 500 cards off Craigslist last night..... can't wait until they get here so I can start building more decks! I don't have a lot of money to invest in cards, so I was especially pleased to hear about "Pauper Magic" in the podcast. I like the idea of building decks and trying to find clever strategies that others haven't thought of or aren't expecting. I'm glad to see that there are other new players here as well as veterans. I hope to visit often and learn a lot on the way! RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - jinsca - 2010-01-20 10:54 AM Hey guys I'm new to the forums here and wanted to introduce myself and my relationship to magic. First off I'm from San Diego, CA. I'm 21 years old and am a University student. I found DC by just searching for MTG podcasts. I want to thank Alex for the podcast I really appreciate the work you put into it. As far as magic goes I play socially but also enjoy playing at FNMs and "standard sunday". I started playing the summer before lorywn block so i'm pretty new. I started playing casual decks and then switched to standard. I also draft socially with friends and at FNMs. Thanks guys I look forward to posting on the forums! P.S. I didn't see this thread and i don't know how to delete the other thread i created in off topic... P.P.S. How do you make the card links in your posts so it links the card name to the visual image thing? RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Rich - 2010-01-30 02:29 AM Hey, I'm new here. Love the podcasts and find them quite helpful. I'm from Chicago and at the time of typing this am 22. I first came into magic when Ravnica and Guildpact were new. I still love Orzhov, but since it's no longer standard legal.... I just got back into the game a year or so ago as a more serious gamer. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - prock7 - 2010-02-07 16:37 PM Wow, can't believe you've been back Alex, & for 1 episode you too Dan!!!! I guess this is not very exciting news for those who have been listening for the last 4 or so months but it is very big news for me. it was a sad day for me in August '08 when you two went off air so to speak. anyway can't wait to catch up on all the shows i've missed. in terms of my Magic background i've played very causal MTG on and off for many years but really took the game up in ernest back around Morningtide. in 2008 i had the Magic "fever" bad, i bought everything and anything (well not everything but lots and lots of theme decks). i've since slowed down buying a little but enjoy the game as much as ever. still a very causal player, i'm older then most i guess, in my 40's. i have a family which includes two daughters who aren't old enough to play yet (not that they would anyway but we'll see as time goes on) that's it. Pete great to be back Alex!! ![]() thanks for many great shows in the past Alex and Dan. special shout out to you too Mav! RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Disturbedone0777 - 2010-02-08 20:26 PM Well I'm new to magic for the most part. I played some when I was much younger and didn't really have any kind of my own income to play competitive but the experience did give me basic knowledge on how to play when I came back. I started playing again literally the day M10 dropped. I got very lucky and happened to be in a game store about to buy D&D books when I saw magic cards and thought it might be fun to try playing again and more competitively. I partook in the Missouri's (state) 2009 although it's no longer sanctioned as state, it had another name that I forgot, where I played a mono-Black Vampires deck and lost over and over to jund. As a player my preferred colors tend to be blue and Black. I'm open to discussion about anything magic related as I'm trying to learn as much as I can as fast as I can so that I can get back into playing competitively. I found this forum and show at work because it was the only website not blocked for it's meta-tag of "games". However now that I've found it, I am subscribed and very happy to listen and partake in discussion. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Dark Wolf - 2010-02-16 21:10 PM Hello. I've been playing since Conflux, and am relatively new to the game. However, I pick up fast and thus hope to be of great help when people put new decks up to be critiqued. Deck-building which leads into tournament play is my favorite part of Magic, so I hope I can be of help to everyone. Hello, I've been playing since Conflux, and am relatively new to the podcast. However, my specialty is making Magic decks and hopefully making them tournament worthy. I'm a Johnny/Spike combination, and I love playing to win. I hope I can be of help to anyone who posts decks on the forums to be critiqued. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Singthesoul - 2010-02-23 21:28 PM Hi! I'm Christine. Yes I'm female.(Usually when it comes to this stuff I have to be straight forward with it) Well, My first real set is Alara though I have cards way back from tempest and 7th edition. Apparently my dad played when he was younger. I have yet to get my hands on any worldwake cards but I'm exited to ![]() I'm so-so at deck building, it's just something that'll take time for me to get good at. I play casually but my decks would be legal for vintage and legacy I'm pretty sure.(I haven't really looked at the banned lists all that close) Though I'm still learning I'm getting thrust into becoming good. I play too well to be a beginner persay, but I play against people who are WAY better then me so I am working hard to get my decks to be more competitive against theirs ![]() Oh, I'm from Albany, New York too. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - hobosock - 2010-03-02 06:02 AM Hey, what's up? I'm new to MtG and to DC as well. I'm not spending a lot of money on cards, but I like the deck building strategies of MtG. I found the DC podcasts a couple of months ago and enjoyed listening in! I'd just like to say that you do a great job with these podcasts. While you don't specifically cater to new players, you've done a great job explaining each card so even I, as a very new player, understands. Hi there. - valk - 2010-04-04 08:47 AM Graeme Scott here, joined up through the podcast and love your approach to things Alex. Really liked "building in layers" and I hope you'll do a few things like considerations on popular cards. For example, like your analysis of Jund V Jund at Sandiego and the idea of targetting land in jund's early turns to weaken it considerably. Maybe if you want a quick tactic thing to add to the cast, pick a card that is seeing a lot of play and how different decks can deal with it? I'd like to hear how you approach this while trying to keep your decks synergies for it's own offense. About me? I'm an Australian male that has been playing since fallen empires about 94, first year of high school, but casually on and off amongst a small group. Finally have a local store that holds games, so after not playing since Onslaught really, I'm back. I like to try things people don't. Land destruction is my favourite ongoing deck theme. My versions (made from what I get in packs) lose a fair bit but I love how domineering it is when it wins. ^_^ RE: Hi there. - yankeedave - 2010-04-06 12:19 PM Hey All My name is Dave, and contrary to my login, I am not actually American, but English! The name comes from the fact I grew up in Indiana, and left at the age of 16 - and now that I am 34 I still have the damn accent! ![]() I have played since Mirrodin and have always loved the older formats instead of Standard, which I havent played since about 2005. I play in the Richmond Legacy League (Season 1 Champ!) and have played Alex a few times (once with Burn and once with Belcher) both times having been mentioned in his Podcasts! (I feel so proud! ) I consider myself a learning mage, but have a pretty good knowledge of Legacy and hope to do well in the upcoming UK Legacy Nationals! Anyways, nice to meet ya'll (see, I can still be a yank!) Dave RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Ferridge - 2010-04-06 12:33 PM Hi Everyone, I started playing magic around revised, but didnt buy many card until Ice Age. I played casual magic with a handfull of people until Urza Saga came out. I stopped playing until last september, and since then ive been going to a local FNM group. Because of the long absence ive missed alot of set and cards, but with like to think im ok with the recent cards. Standard is definately my favourite format as missing out on the older sets doesnt make that big a difference. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Xavious - 2010-04-12 23:53 PM Greetings everyone, Browncoat managed to drag me over here today while talking about decks. I'm still very new to Magic, having only started playing during Zendikar, and still learning the ropes. That means I'm prone bouts of madness when deck building In general, I tend to make my decks legal for standard gameplay. Partly because I'm most familiar with Magic 2010 and Zendikar and in part because I hope to start attending FNM at a local shop. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - StratGuy74 - 2010-04-14 13:17 PM Hey guys, I'm Ollie and I started Magic just before 10th Edition came out. However, I collect older cards by preference, and the oldest card I own is a mint condition Beta forest! Hail my pitiful achievement! I'm from North Yorkshire in the UK, and am mainly a casual player, although I will soon start enrolling tournaments. Cheers guys! RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Ferridge - 2010-04-14 13:24 PM Hi All, Out of interest where is everyone from? Whats your local FNM? RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Deckbuilder - 2010-04-20 19:36 PM I'm from syracuse NY, although i am currently in DC for school, I've been playing magic since mirroden block although i have only recently begun playing in tournaments. If anyone knows a place to play in dc i haven't found one yet RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - sparkmage - 2010-05-11 04:26 AM Hello, as you can see i love spark mage ^_^ I started really playing after ww but i started really collecting around christmas 09. i'm from gainseville fl and i play at Megagamingandcomics RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Xanamir - 2010-05-24 18:09 PM It occurred to me that I never posted in this thread, even though I've been here for a couple of months! So, let's see; my name is Matt and I'm from Tucson, AZ, in the US. I started playing Magic around Onslaught block (I think Legion had just been released) and my first deck was an Elf Tribe that my friend helped me build (he also taught me how to play). I played pretty casually up until Ravnica, then fell off the wagon for a couple of years. I came back into the game only recently as a result of playing Duels of the Planeswalkers on the Xbox Live Arcade, which resparked my interest and made me jump back into the game. Soon after, I started listening to Deck Construct during my commute to work, and I was quickly propelled to international fame and worldwild recognition when Alex featured my deck list on a show! I've been dodging fans and signing autographs ever since (okay, not really, but some guys at my local card shop recognized my name which was awesome!) My favorite color to play is red, although lately, blue has been catching my interest as well. As indicated by (well, just about everything I've ever posted), playing dragons is my affinity, since they're my main focus and inspiration as a fan of the fantasy genre as a whole, and the reason I first started playing Magic in the first place (the idea of being a "dragon-mage" was what sold me on the game originally.) RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - lasraik - 2010-06-28 02:02 AM I'm from Abq, N.M. USA and I started playing a several years ago. My first set was Darksteel and I also played Fifth Dawn. I had a group of a few guys I worked with when I lived in Reno NV but since I've moved back to N.M. it's been tough finding other MTG players. Talked one of my friends into playing and he's really enjoyed it so far. Looking to find more people to play with. Got back into the game during Alara Reborn and it's been a ton of fun. I do a bit of business travel (I'm a software consultant) and to help pass the time during flights and airports, I started downloading the DeckConstruct podcast, I've since downloaded every episode. Very nice site and thanks for the time and work you put in, DeckConstruct is my favorite MTG site. RE: Introduce yourself! (Version 2.0) - Into the Aether - 2010-07-02 15:25 PM Hello My name is Daniel Campbell. I am from Boston MA USA. I first started playing magic when I was around 13 years old when I started playing magic with some friends. However at that point I did not have any idea what Magic set it was. I started playing seriouslly with Shadowmor Block. I play serious T2 but enjoy limited and casual much more. I also spend my summers in Woods Hole MA with Browncoat, who I am going to FNM later today with
