Full Version: The war on spam continues!

I've installed some plugins here that should hopefully decrease the amount of spammers infiltrating the forums!
  • To register, you now have to answer an MTG-related question (which is super easy even if you've played MTG for only one day).
  • Members have to have at least 10 posts before they can edit their signature, edit their profile link, or post a poll.
  • Thread titles must have a minimum of 5 characters, and posts must have at least 20 characters (to prevent spammers getting to 10 posts with silly replies like "lol" and "that's nice").
  • All outbound signature and profile links are now rel=nofollow (search engines won't follow them).

It's maybe a little over the top, but shouldn't affect anyone who genuinely wants to take part in the forums. As always, spammers will be wasting their time!

(Oh yeah, if someone posted in a thread while you were typing, you should now get a notification to avoid getting sarnath'd!)
I believe the only response to this is HUZZAH!

Now when can we begin the crusade against the member list?
Huzzah indeed. Alex is there a way to pass more rights to Browncoat and I so we can actually remove users beyond just blocking them or banning them by user name? If we can actually remove the user name then we wouldn't have a mis-count on our actual user base.
Unfortunately I can't see any way to allow you to delete users except by making you an admin.

However I've installed another plugin that will automatically delete anyone who hasn't activated their account for 30 days after registering, and anyone who has activated but hasn't made a post for 60 days after registering. That should keep the memberlist under control (I ran it manually just now to kick things off and it doesn't seem to have broken the forum! Wink )
I just noticed that our registered users is now down from 3-- something and at 2-- something. Running that must have gotten rid of a lot of our friends that spam bots. Seems like the forums are coming back under control. Glad to see this community is far from keeling over.
